So when someone from the NHL calls me and says, “Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?”

… That’s when they lost me.

That was it, right there. That was the moment.

Because, while I may not deserve to be an NHL All-Star, I know I deserve to be the judge of what my kids will — and won’t — be proud of me for.

Purely for the satisfaction of seeing Bettman grinding his teeth while having to hand over the keys to the MVP prize car. Say what you will about John Scott, but he has handled the whole situation with dignity. Unfortunately Bettman and the rest of the jackasses at the NHL office and various teams (looking at you Arizona and Montreal) have behaved like petulant children.

Bettman is such a little fucking troll. My favorite part of the yearly awarding-the-Stanley-Cup-to-a-team-that-isn’t-the-Sabres is that the fans all boo him when he walks onto the ice. It’s glorious.

Bettman is one of those people that you see and just know they need to get punched in the face. Even if you just saw him walking down the street and had no idea who he was I’m sure you would be able to sense the jackassery wafting off of him and know he is a dipshit.

That was an absolutely fantastic piece of writing. I enjoyed the hell out of that. And, as somebody who trained all their life to be in a symphony orchestra and finds himself on playing in the symphonic equivalent of the NAHL, occasionally getting called up to the AHL, I can relate. And also, fuck the NHL. I’d love to have a beer with this guy.

He was playing at MTU while I was attending. Never had any classes with him as I was a few years ahead, but having bumped into him a few times, I remember him being a genuinely nice guy. Also huge, when he was on skates his jersey logo was at eye level.

The NHL handled the whole thing like a bunch of shitheads. It hasn’t been verified, but the rumblings are that the NHL orchestrated the trade to Montreal in an effort to get Scott out of the All Star game. Whether that is true or just conspiracy theory is anyone’s guess. Unfortunately for the NHL, they had already set precedent multiple times by allowing people selected from one team to represent that team in the All Star game even after being traded to the other conference after the selection process was completed. Couple that with a huge fan backlash and they would have looked even worse and taken a big financial hit had they followed through on their wishes to exclude Scott from the All Star game.
